As of July 5, 25 counties have detected West Nile Virus (WNV) activity. Three human WNV cases have been reported in Kern County and two equine cases in Sonoma County.

Surveillance for WNV in 2007 has identified 159 West Nile Virus positive dead birds from 20 counties, four flocks of WNV positive sentinel chickens in three counties and 72 WNV positive mosquito pools from nine counties. These surveillance numbers could indicate that the mosquito and vector control agencies may have another busy year battling WNV carrying mosquitoes.

The public is urged to follow the three "Ds" to help protect themselves and their families from WNV:
  • To help protect yourself and others use repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus before going outdoors.

  • Fix or replace missing or torn door and window screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home. Offer to help neighbors fix their screens.

  • DRAIN standing water in and around your yard so mosquitoes will not have a place to lay their eggs. Change water in pet dishes, birdbaths, plants and flower containers weekly. Keep gutters free from leaves and debris. Help others in your neighborhood to "mosquito proof" their yards, too.

Brian A. from Boxboro, MA asks:
I have a very unusual application. I need a fogger nozzle that works at low volume flow for water. I want to pump out about 30-50 ml/minute of water in very fine droplets. The nozzle must have no metals in it as I am applying very high voltages to induce electron flow onto the water droplets. My current pump applies about 100psi, but I am open to any approach that gives me small droplets size in this volumetric regime. I have two electrostatic spray systems. But I want to apply more charge to them. Please advise and suggest alternatives.

Our equipment only uses brass or stainless steel nozzles and jets. However, there are some manufacturers of agricultural products that do make fogging devices out of plastics. Meteor Systems makes a fogging assembly that has a flow rate of 5 liters/hour (83 ml/min) at 45 psi and produces droplets of 70 – 100 microns in size. Netafim USA also produces a plastic fogger that has a flow rate of 2 gal/hour (126 ml/min) at 60 psi that has an average droplet size of 90 microns. In either case you would need to install a pressure regulator to reduce and control the pressure from your pump.
